A lot of us are fortunate enough to grow some sort of food in our yards or gardens. And that can range from grapefruit and oranges to tomatoes and varieties of greens to add to a dinnertime salad. But the Sonoran Desert — and many other spots across the country — offer us plenty of flora to safely nibble, if we’re so inclined or in need.

Jimmy Fike has spent more than a decade in search of plants fitting that description. He took photos of more than 100 of them and compiled them in the new book, "Edible Plants: A Photographic Survey of the Wild Edible Botanicals of North America."

The Show spoke with him about the book, starting the conversation with asking why we should know which plants are edible.
