For about a third of the year, Phoenix sees temperatures at or above 100 degrees, and summers here are only expected to get hotter. Gov. Katie Hobbs proclaimed May 6-10 as Heat Awareness Week.

With how extreme heat can zap car batteries and wreak havoc on tires, Kelsey Mo with the Arizona Department of Transportation said it’s important to be proactive.

“During the summertime it’s really important to double check that your tire pressure levels are at the level that the manufacturer recommends,” she said, “So you can avoid or at least reduce the chances that it blows out while you’re out driving.”

An overall inspection can save you from an unexpected breakdown. But Mo still recommends taking precautions — even for lengthy delays in traffic — by packing an emergency kit.

“A first aid kit and sun protection — that includes things like sunscreen or a hat or sun shade for your car,” said Mo, describing what should be included. “And also any prescription medication that you may take, be sure to have that on hand as well.”

Mo said emergency kits should also include extra water and food.

“Also make sure that you bring out a fully charged cellphone,” she said, “and if you have an external battery charger, that’s even better.”

Mo also recommended keeping your gas tank filled up to three-quarters of a tank to keep your A/C running.
