Holocaust Remembrance Day, or Yom HaShoah, begins on the evening of May 6. It marks the start of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in 1943 during World War II

It’s a time when people in Israel, the U.S. and in Arizona will commemorate the murder of 6 million Jewish people during the war, while honoring survivors.

“We still have about 60 survivors who are living throughout the state, and many of them are still committed to sharing their stories and speak to thousands of Arizona school children each year,” said Leslie Feldman, executive director of the Phoenix Holocaust Association.

The organization is marking the remembrance through Tuesday evening, culminating with a free film screening about Jewish resistance during the war.
