California Gov. Gavin Newsom said he’s preparing to introduce emergency legislation to state lawmakers that would offer Arizona abortion providers an expedited path to getting licensed there.

Newsom told MSNBC that if the near-total ban on abortion in Arizona takes effect, California providers are bracing for an influx of patients.

“People actually said last week that people, well, don’t worry about any 1864 bans in Arizona," said Newsom. "You can all go to California, you can all go to a neighboring state. We took that quite literally and quite seriously.”

Newsom said the measure could become law close to or even before the earliest the ban can take effect in June.

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes said in a recent video statement that even though providers should be able to operate in-state, it’s an option she’s considering.

“I called California Attorney General Rob Bonta and discussed the possibility of obtaining emergency licenses for doctors and nurses in states like California,” said Mayes.

She added that an update on those efforts will come soon.
