Firing celebratory gunfire into the air on New Year’s Eve is against the law and could result in a felony charge. And police in at least one city have ways of tracking down where that gunfire came from.

Glendale police Sgt. Randy Stewart says the technology they use is called Shotspotter.

"When shots go off, it goes to that app or goes to our communications where they get the information and it gives them the location, how many shots are being detected and time when it happened," said Stewart.

The Phoenix police also takes gunfire seriously, and if officers are dispatched and the person firing the firearm can be located, there’s potential for that person to be arrested and charged with unlawful discharge of firearms.
