Five members of the Arizona Humane Society’s emergency response team are in Maui to help with search and rescue efforts of pets in the aftermath of deadly wildfires.

“They will be looking for dogs that are injured, dogs that are free roaming that may have escaped the fire and are in the fire area, maybe trying to find their way home,” said President and CEO Steve Hansen. “And sadly they’ll also be looking for remains of animals that did not make it.”

The team is expected to be on the island for a week. This is not the first time the Humane Society has deployed its emergency response team. They also supported search and rescue efforts after Hurricanes Katrina and Harvey.
