Chandler is offering a new health tool for its police officers with the goal of preventing and early detection of heart disease.

The Chandler City Council approved a $250,000 contract with Sigma Tactical Wellness to provide health screenings. Officers who choose to participate will get detailed information about their metabolic status and individual cardiovascular risk, along with exercise and nutrition recommendations.

The program will evaluate early stages of coronary disease and markers used to predict a heart attack. Sigma says law enforcement officers are more likely to suffer heart attacks at a younger age than the general population.

Stress, intense physical activity and obesity are considered contributing factors.
