The Arizona Department of Public Safety has signed an agreement to provide mutual aid between the state and the Hopi Tribe.

The agreement will allow for state troopers to patrol in the Hopi reservation as well as respond to emergencies there.

Bart Graves with DPS says the department has had a good working relationship with the tribe, but this helps to set a formal working relationship.

“They will occasionally call for DPS Services regarding air rescue, law enforcement, what have you. This allows for DPS personnel to cross into the reservation and respond," Graves said.

Hopi lawmakers have supported the tribe to look for mutual aid agreements with neighboring police agencies.
