ICE Inmate Dies In Custody In Arizona

November 28, 2016

A Guatemalan woman who was in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s custody here in Arizona died Sunday morning.

The 36-year-old woman was pronounced dead Sunday morning after suffering a series of seizures at Banner Medical Center in Casa Grande.

According to ICE officials, Raquel Calderon de Hidalgo first had a seizure at the Eloy Detention Center then suffered more seizures in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. The cause of death is still unknown.

The Border Patrol arrested her in mid-November and she was in ICE’s custody since last week. In a statement, ICE officials wrote that Calderon de Hidalgo was awaiting a return to Guatemala and had no criminal history in the U.S.

Calderon is the third person to die in ICE custody this fiscal year which started Oct. 1. Federal records show ten ICE inmates died in all of last year.
