New Mexico's governor signed legislation on Thursday that clears the way for a 500-mile long recreational trail that will traverse the state.

The Rio Grande Trail will run north to south across the state of New Mexico from Colorado to Texas.Officials say it will be New Mexico's version of the Appalachian Trail.

Gov. Susana Martinez signed the first phase into law Thursday creating a commission that will explore where and how to build the 500 mile long trail.

State officials envision a route that runs through cities, national monuments and state parks. They would also collaborate with tribal governments. While the cost of the project is still unknown, state officials say it could be completed within four years.
