The head of Tijuana’s municipal sports department was murdered Monday night near his home in central Tijuana.

Arturo Hachadur Kaloyan Aguirre, nicknamed “Hacho,” was driving home when he was shot several times by unknown assailants. The incident took place around 7 p.m. in the Colonia Sandoval.

Authorities said Tuesday that they don’t believe the incident was a robbery, but that they’re exploring a range of possible motives.

Kaloyan had just recently been named to his post by new Tijuana Mayor Jorge Astiazarán. He occupied the same position in the administration of former Tijuana Mayor Jorge Hank Rhon from 2004 to 2007.

In a statement, Mayor Astiazarán said state authorities had offered their support in investigating the case. The murder might have been captured on video surveillance in the area, said Juan Jose Tavera, spokesman for the state attorney general’s office.

Tavera said authorities would be poring through the surveillance video for clues.

Other than the victim’s public service, Kaloyan also owned a restaurant in Tijuana and was an avid long-distance runner.
