ADOT Training Mexican Truck Drivers

September 19, 2017

An Arizona Department of Transportation program, designed to train Mexican truck drivers on safety regulations when they cross into the U.S., is expanding in Sonora with more trainings Tuesday.

The program is designed to teach Mexican commercial drivers what to expect when they cross the border into Arizona.

So far, nearly 90 drivers completed the testing in the program’s first six weeks.

Drivers who qualify with the course can speed up their border wait times by communicating with ADOT inspectors through WhatsApp messaging if they have questions about the safety or condition of their vehicle.

"So they know that we expect the tires to be in this condition and the brakes to be in this condition," said Tom Herrmann, ADOT spokesman. "So they know when they have a load strapped in a flat bed that we expect and our requirements are that it be strapped in this way depending on the size and weight."

Tuesday’s class will be the fourth of eight held this year.
