Border Agent Hiring Bill Would Waive Some Polygraphs

May 01, 2017

A Congressional lawmaker from southern Arizona has introduced a bill that would speed up the hiring of border agents.

Republican Martha McSally’s bill gives the Customs and Border Protection commissioner the authority to speed up the hiring of current law enforcement and military veterans who’ve already passed background checks and polygraph examinations.

Right now, many CBP applicants who’ve passed polygraphs with other agencies are failing that of CBP.

Currently there’s already a shortage of 1,400 customs officers and 1,700 Border Patrol agents, McSally said.

The new legislation would exempt certain applicants from CBP’s polygraph exam if they already have three years of experience in law enforcement and have already passed a polygraph. Or if they served a minimum of 3 years in the military and held a top secret clearance.
