Judge OKs Lawsuit That Could Give Legal Representation To Migrant Children

June 28, 2016

A federal judge in Seattle has given the go-ahead for a class action lawsuit that, if successful, will give legal representation to thousands of unaccompanied migrant children fighting to stay in the U.S.

The legal battle between the U.S. government and immigrant rights groups has been fought in court since just after the 2014 Central American migrant crisis. That's when thousands of children arrived at the U.S.-Mexico border seeking asylum in this country.

More than 10,000 of those children had no legal representation in immigration court. Last Friday, the federal judge ruled that many migrant children can be included in a class action lawsuit filed to obligate the U.S. to provide the children legal defense to keep them from being deported.
